EXHIBITS

SOUTHEAST MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY - The SMP offers interactive and rotating exhibits in the Mori Hosseini Center, Bldg. 1200. Admission to the Museum is free. All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Museum hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesdays and weekends from 1 to 5 p.m. 386-506-4475. All discussions are wheelchair-accessible. Information is also available at www.smponline.org Running through Feb. 12, 2010 in the downstairs gallery, will be "Recent Acquisitions," an exhibition of new artists who have contring through May 30, "Double Exposure: African-American Before and Behind the Camera."

A showcase of vintage photographs from the Amistad Center for Art & Culture's historical collection of art and artifacts with photo-based art by contemporary African-American artists. This landmark exhibition comprehensively explores the African-American experience. It highlights African-American history, as well as the history of photography.

Exhibition Film Series - An Interdisciplinary film series presented in conjunction with current museum exhibitions and co-sponsored by the Center for Interdisciplinary Writing and Research at Daytona State College. Wednesday Movie Matinees: The (Cinematic) Play's the Thing - An afternoon film matinee series presenting modern interpretations of some of the best-known and loved plays, operas and musicals. Laura Stewart, a film and art historian, author and adjunct DSC instructor (and former Fine Arts writer for the Daytona Beach News-Journal), is your host, offering background, introducing the films and leading audience discussion in a Q&A period afterwards. Admission is free and screenings are at 2 p.m. in Bldg. 1200, SMP, Madorsky Theater. Feb. 10 - "The Blue Angel (1931)"; Feb. 17 - "Grand Hotel (1932)"; Feb. 24 - "Three on a Match (1932)."

Dinner and a Movie - Enjoy dinner at DSC's Café 101 (RSVP required: $15 per person - call (386) 506-3859) Dinner seating begins at 6 p.m., then follow up at 7 p.m. with a comfortable seat in the Madorsky Theater for a look at the classic films of 1939. SMP Children's Program: Photo Flower Vase - Feb. 20, 1-3 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon of free parent-child art and photography sessions for children aged 7-14. Museum staff lead a variety of fun activities that explore new ways of seeing and creating. Decorate a vase with cascading curling ribbon, a large bow, a piece of film, and attach slide mounts with individual pictures of you to give as a gift. But that's not all. Fold photographs into paper flowers that are guaranteed to last. Cost: $18 per session. Pre-register for each full series of 4 sessions for $54 ($18 savings). Call (386) 506-4569.

DUAL ENROLLMENT - Feb. 4, 6 p.m. Early College Open House offers information on getting a head start on college while in high school. no matter where you choose to pursue your higher education. Through Dual Enrollment, you can begin your college studies by choosing one of several career oriented programs linked with programs offered at Daytona State College. COLLOQUIUMS DEBUT - Feb. 2, 6-7:20 p.m. "Evermore: The Women of Michael Field."

First in a series of colloquiums presented by the Center for Interdisciplinary Writing and Research. Dr. Michelle Lee examines the work of two extraordinary women who joined forces and lives under one pseudonym to become "Michael Field," a successful literary sensation in 19th century London. Coming later this month is:

Feb. 16 - "Unmasking the American Way: An Investigation of the Dual Ideological Identity of the New Wave of Superhero Films," with Prof. Seth Blazer, who will explore the recent explosion of superhero films in American cinema and its relationship to our current anxieties regarding the "War on Terror" by looking closely at the film, "The Dark Knight."

Feb. 26, 11 a.m. - "Ditch of Dreams." Steven Noll, senior lecturer, University of Florida and David Tegeder, associate professor, Santa Fe College, two prominent environmental historians, will discuss the fascinating cultural history of the Florida Barge Canal with reference to its impact on our state's ecological development and environmental policy.

8th ANNUAL AUTO SHOW . - Feb. 6, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Featuring cars of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Plenty of food and beverages available for purchase. AFRICAN-AMERICAN SALUTE - Feb. 27, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. African American Caribbean Heritage Organization and Black History Day Festival. Festivities begin with a ceremony which recognizes the longtime support and contributions of Daytona State College, and honors outstanding dignitaries. The festival, educational and entertaining, features local musicians, dance groups, arts and crafts, food vendors, and representatives of many local service organizations. FALCON SNACK SHOP - There are two campus locations, the coffee and snack bars can be found in the Allied Health Bldg. 320 and adjacent to the Academic Support Center, Bldg. 500. They are open 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, closing at 1 p.m. Fridays. The Building 320 location is also open 4:30- 7 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays. Serving baked goods, fresh fruit, Starbuck's coffee and more.

CAFÉ 101 - Now serving Sunday brunch, Cafe 101 is part of the International Hospitality Institute's Culinary Division, under the direction of Associate Professor and Assistant Chair Chef Jeff Conklin and Associate Professor Chef Clarence Pan. The teaching cafe and kitchen had reopened in the Mori Hosseini Cente, Building 1200. RSVP for 11:30 a.m. or noon for lunch. Dinner is now being served starting at 5:30 p.m. Fridays. For $9 (including tax), lunch patrons receive an appetizer, entrée, dessert and beverage. Vegetarian meals are available by request. Gratuities are welcome and help fund student scholarships. Payment is by cash only at Café 101. The cost for dinner is $12. Brunch is $18. No take-out service is available at this time. Café 101 is open to the public. THE ARTS

'THIN MAN' TRIBUTE - Feb. 19, 8 p.m. Join Mark Hodgson and special guests for a night of blues in the spirit of the great saxman Nobel "Thin Man" Watts and King Snake Records founder Bob Greenlee. Watts and Greenlee were icons of the Florida blues scene and profoundly influenced many local players. Proceeds support a scholarship fund at Daytona State in memory of Watts and Greenlee. GODSPELL - Feb. 23, 2 p.m. and Feb. 24-27, and March 5-6, 7:30 p.m. (also March 7 at 2 p.m.) Enjoy the 1970's Broadway musical that produced the classic song, "Day By Day" and which is based on the Gospel of Matthew. BROADWAY BOUND - Feb. 28, 2-4 p.m. This Community Concert features "Tim Rippey on Broadway." Starring the Mix and Match Choir ,followed by Tim Rippey playing Broadway songs and more. Event benefits the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation in support of Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Hospice Care, Nursing Excellence and The Cancer Institute and the Daytona State College Foundation. TICKET INFORMATION -All Volusia County students can get a complimentary ticket, including DBCC, Embry-Riddle, Stetson, Bethune-Cookman, as well as high school, middle school and elementary students. School ID is required. Students can come the night of the event and if there are tickets available they will get one free of charge. Mail orders can be obtained by sending payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope to Daytona State College - The Arts, P.O. Box 2811, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-2811. To order by phone or for information, call 386-506-3042 during box office hours, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. There is no service fee to use major credit cards, but there is a $10 minimum on phone orders.

Tickets also are available one hour before every event at the venue where it is being held, either the News-Journal Center or the Theater Center (Bldg. 220) or Goddard Center (Bldg. 230) on the College's Daytona campus.

CALLING ALL WRITERS/EDITORS - In Motion, the campus newspaper, seeks students interested in writing sports, arts and entertainment, news or features, as well as artists, copy editors, photographers and cartoonists. Ole, the college's literary magazine, is now seeking submissions for its spring edition. Short stories (500-750 words), poetry, memoirs and other creative writing, as well as photographs and illustrations are needed as well. If you have an unusual or unique artwork, we will make arrangements for a photographer to take a picture of it for consideration in the magazine. DELTA EPSILON CHI - The business club for students invites everyone to its 1 p.m. Wednesday meetings at the Daytona Campus, Bldg. 130, Rm. 154. The office is in Bldg. 130, Rm. 107. Come by for an application.

THE ENGLISH CLUB - A local chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta.It meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays. Refreshments are served at every meeting. A movie is also shown at every meeting.Past films include "Five Easy Pieces," "Anne of a Thousand Days" and "Bonnie and Clyde." On occasion, theclubputs on poetry readings. At least twice a year members attends performances of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Any student, faculty or staff member is eligible to join. There is no membership fee. although students who meet the criteria can pay $30 and become members of the national organization. English club meets in Wednesdays in building 500, Rm 210 at 2:30 p.m.

HISTORY IN MAKING - The History Club sponsors trips, has lively discussions and hosts monthly movies. Students should contact Len Lempel at ext. 3497. SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION - Academic support for students enrolled in difficult required courses. It is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and a peer-facilitated out-of-class study group that incorporates study skills with course content. This program targets high-risk courses rather than high-risk students. High-risk courses are traditionally difficult due to their content. Courses targeted for this program: MAC 1105 College Algebra, BSC 1085 Hum Ant & Phys I, MCB 1010 Microbiology, CHM 1025 Intro to Chemistry, BSC 1005 Survey Biology.
