Daytona State College's athletic teams come together to provide a better Christmas for those less fortunate.
The students on the various sports teams for Daytona State have joined WESH and the CW 18 to help collect food and toys for the needy this holiday season. WESH 2 has participated in the "Share Your Christmas" event for the past 24 years.
According to the Florida Department of Children and Families, there are about 59,000 homeless men, women and children in Florida, based on DCF's 2008 Annual Report on Homeless Conditions in
Florida. With today's economy, this number may have increased drastically. The main duty of the Salvation Army and Second Harvest Food Bank, the recipients of "Share Your Christmas" earnings, is to help provide for the needy.
This year the Community Leadership Committee, coordinated by Coach Hamilton, hopes to collect canned goods and toys for the food/toy drive. The students on the athletic teams have been provided with boxes to decorate and will be placing them in various locations on campus. Students who attend Daytona State are encouraged to help fill the boxes with canned and boxed goods as well as toys to be handed out on Dec. 7 at the Sunshine Park Shopping Center on Ridgewood. The event will be broadcast live on WESH and WKCF.
If students are unable to participate in the event while on campus, the Salvation Army and Second Harvest Food Bank appreciate all the help they can get, whether it be by donating food, clothing, toys, money or by volunteering. This holiday season, times are hard, so a little help goes a long way. By supporting the athletic teams' effort to give a better Christmas to the less fortunate, students can look forward to an even merrier Christmas.

Forgive me if i am wrong here, but the picture in this article clearly doesn't show the aforementioned organization. Nor does it mention the fact that the Student Gov't Association also participated in the Wesh 2 Share Your Christmas. (Continued…)
