Lady Falcons fly through regional qualifier
Bobby Spence, In Motion Staff Writer
The NJCAA Region VIII Qualifier began a little rough for both Daytona State and Seminole Community College, but DSC was able to fight their way into the nationals. The DSC Lady Falcons defeated the SCC Lady Raiders, 982-934.?
The windy conditions on Friday, April 17, made for the highest scoring round of the qualifier. DSC's, Ashley Mooney, shot a round low of 79, despite the bad conditions.?
"The first six holes my tempo was a little off," Ashley said about her play on Friday. "After the sixth, my game evened out and I was able to get in a good round. Hopefully, the wind will calm down, but you have to play with what comes and deal with."?
The conditions did improve on Saturday, as Ashley was able to shoot a 74, which was the second lowest score of the second round. The lowest score of the round was owned by her teammate, Meghan Hughes, who shot a 73. Meghan shot in the 70s the entire qualifier, giving her the lowest total score of 229.?
The Lady Falcons headed into the second round with a 20 stroke lead, even with the windy circumstances during the first round, only to build their lead as the conditions improved. This was an important match for DSC, as they are heading into the NJCAA National Golf Championship in May.?
"We were confident about the qualifier," DSC Golf Coach Laura Brown said. "I told the ladies coming in, that you want to win by as many shots as possible, because that just builds confidence and playing the same course that we are playing nationals on, will only help more."?
With each round the Lady Falcons continued to build their lead on the Lady Raiders, eventually playing their way into the national championships. All members of the Lady Falcon golf team will be competing in the NJCAA championships on May 18-21 at LPGA International Golf Course.?
"As captain of the team this year, I do my best to motivate the girls," DSC sophomore, Melissa Magdor said. "As I move forward in my career and try to improve my personal game, I still have to think of everyone else. Golf is an individual sport, if you make it to the professional level, but as captain of a collegian team, I have to stay focused and help my team win."
