'Enviropals' makes debut at WDSC

Daytona State College's Public Broadcasting station WDSC-Channel 15, in conjunction with Shooting Star Educational Television, is screening its first original children's program titled "Enviropals."

The weekly series features the adventures of Rae-Rae the Red Panda, Safari Stan, Safari Sue and their friends the Safari Kids. Each episode focuses on a theme such as air, water and noise pollution, water conservation, global warming, alternative energy and other pressing environmental concerns. The series combines live actors, onsite visits, animation, upbeat original music and of course the star of the show, a 5-foot-6 Red Panda who lives in a giant house tree!

In addition to the broadcast, parents, children and teachers have 24-hour access to the production's Web site at RaeRae.tv. There, they can access the latest environmental news from Rae-Rae and teachers can download lesson plans and activity sheets that correspond to each episodes theme. The first episode of "Enviropals" aired Feb. 14 and in conjunction with that, there was a live premiere at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center.

WDSC is a non-commercial, educational television PBS station that reaches more than 1.6 million people throughout Volusia, Flagler, Orange and Seminole counties. The state-of-the-art digital television facility and production staffs are the heart of College's degree program in Digital Television and Media Technology. Students get hands-on, real world production training in a demanding, professional setting from the day they attend their first session.

New wireless technology takes wing

The Daytona State College Information Technology department is proud to announce the unveiling of our new wireless access network: FalconAIR, which provides faculty, staff and students with wireless Internet access at locations throughout our campuses, with even more coverage planned for the future.

To use FalconAIR in a covered area, connect to the FalconAIR wireless network and bring up a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. You will then must login using the login section in the upper-lefthand corner of your screen. Your user name is your College ID (also known as your student ID or employee ID), and the password is the college PIN that you utilize to access the MyDaytonaState portal. By default, it is initially set to your birth date in mmddyy format.

This network was formerly identified as "DBCC," but you will no longer see "DBCC" as an available wireless network when using portable devices. Please connect to the "FalconAIR" access point instead, and follow instructions to authenticate your connection via the login page. For information on the FalconAIR network and coverage maps, go to: http://daytonastate.edu/helpdesk/wireless/maps.html

Changes in College library login

Effective immediately, students must use their Daytona State College Student ID number as the borrower ID for login to the library's e-books and research databases. The default PIN will remain the last four digits of the student's Social Security number, however, students may change this PIN at any time. Students should also be prepared to present their student photo ID to check materials out of the library.

They are also working on making the Employee ID the login for these resources, but for the time being, faculty and staff will continue to use their Social Security numbers as their borrower IDs for logging in to these resources. Until changes are made automatically, the Library is happy to manually change the login to the employee ID for those who request it. To request this change, call the Circulation Department at ext. 3055.

A revised guide to accessing the library catalog, e-books, and databases is available online a the Library's Web site. Feel free to duplicate this for classes or to post for your online students. If you have questions about these changes, please call the Reference Desk at ext. 3518
