"I'm depressed. I'm bored. I don't have many friends. What now?"- Angst-filled Student 2

People have a hard time making a name for them. Now I don't mean literally. Everyone has a name, or at least something people refer to them as (Insults are a creative art). But I mean metaphorically, as in making yourself relevant. The very point of everything you do should be to make a name for yourself and become someone.

Now you can technically become someone by watching Lost reruns all day and thinking you're smart, and cruising dating websites to meet someone, knowing there are hundreds of people to meet outside the walls around you. You can be someone by eating too much ice cream off your fingers or listening to too much bad music (it's a sin). But to elevate yourself beyond the mundane natures of life you need to do something exceptional.

The first step? Get stuff done.

Start by thinking about what you love. I love music, but I also have a passion for it. If you feel the same way, you can take music and make your own. There are many programs which let you create synthetic music, mix music, or record using real instruments you can borrow from friends. It is a pain, and you will be bad at it to start. But you can always pick up an instrument and try that. Or try meeting bands, getting their contacts, and befriending them. What could go wrong with that? I do all of these things because I have a passion for music.

You can always try reading books about your passion, or research it. If you love fashion, then make yourself knowledgeable! Read what is popular, what is not, and earn knowledge to turn your passion into something relevant, while making a name for yourself. You don't need to read a book to know that mullets are lame, but you may need to know the psychology of color or specifics in sociological marketing.

Easy things you can do with your passion are to write about it or "blog" about it. I am currently writing three books, and all of them revolve around things I am passionate about. If I wasn't, then how would I ever finish the book?

I suggest making good use of your time. Too many people spend too many hours not doing anything, and to be honest, it's depressing. Get up and get stuff done. You will be more satisfied. ?

I adore clothes and different styles, so I decided to start my own clothing line. I also have a passion for writing, so I joined the newspaper team, and ended up with my own column.

I decided that I want to be successful, so I began investing and reading books about investing. I also have a passion for music so I began a record collection.

I also started a charity organization recently that I hope to bring notoriety too. I love giving.?

This may all sound pretentious, but my point stands. Getting stuff done is not only satisfying, but it gives you a name beyond the one you win by default. It makes you somebody that cannot be considered a leech, but considered a valuable member of life. But even leeches can be effective. Just be an efficient one!

A main component of this formula is your ability to be social. You need to be willing to meet people and talk in person. That means put down the cell phone and the ability to text, and get out there and meet people. There are so many opportunities. Now I know not many people are a fan of opportunity, but knowing you have so many options by simply meeting the necessary people is exhilarating.

But the most important thing, by far, is making sure you are happy. Whatever you do, keep in mind that if you are not happy you are a failure. It sounds cruel but you must be pleased with your standing. Being social plus being efficient and doing things equals happiness (doing stuff+meet people=smiles).

Problems occur, roadblocks go up in life. I get it. But as long as you are alive, you may as well make the best of it by being as perfect as you can be. If all people had this mentality the world would be a magnificent place. It sounds ideal, but there is not a reason why it cannot happen. We have potential. We have evolved so far past caveman it is intimidating. But let's not forget that we have plenty of room to improve, and having great core principles can help us achieve success, productivity, and above all, happiness.

The most valuable information that this column has is, "...put down the cell phone and the ability to text, and get out there and meet people."

It's like they're scared to talk to each other!

I have a hard time talking to people in school or heck, anywhere because they're, excuse me for saying this, balls deep in their sidekick or iPhone. (Continued…)

It sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on what's important to you and what you want to do in life. The reason that following your advice is difficult for many people is that many people don't know what their passions are, don't have any hobbies to speak of, or are really bad at being social.
