At a December news conference Dr. Kent Sharples and the Daytona State community named long-time Spruce Creek and Daytona Speed swim coach, Steve Lochte, head coach of the school's new Swimming and Diving program. Among the speakers at the conference were Olympic gold medalists Rowdy Gaines and Ryan Lochte. Lochte, a former Spruce Creek standout and one of the most recognizable swimmers in the country, has been coached by his father even before his days at Spruce Creek.
In Motion sat down with Ryan Lochte to discuss what role he will have with the Daytona State program and whether or not he will train at the school's aquatic center.
IM: What role will you play with new swim program here at Daytona State?
RL: I'll definitely help out…I've been helping out at the University of Florida a little bit with recruiting. I'm not new so I'll definitely have my hand in the recruiting and help out as much as possible with getting this program started.
IM: What kind of opportunity is this going to be for a lot of swimmers who aren't necessarily ready to compete at a Division-I university?
RL: It's a great opportunity. There are a lot of people where money gets in the way, especially with the economy the way it is. It's great for the community and hopefully will bring a lot of swimmers here.
IM: Will you be training here?
RL: Now that (my dad's) the swim coach here I'll be coming here more often. He's been my coach forever.
IM: You've got a younger brother, Devon, who's also a swimmer. What are his plans for this upcoming year?
RL: He'll be starting at the University of Florida this January.
