Intramural program finding success in football, soccer

For the first time in school history, Daytona State College has a women's soccer team and on Oct. 16, the intramural team brought Daytona State its first ever recreational sports win with a 6-1 victory over Port Orange.

Coach Rosanna Bustos leads the historic team, which includes standouts Mirian Hsuki and Melissa Jones. The team currently stands at 2-2 and plays every Tuesday and Thursday at Silver Sands Elementary School in Port Orange.?That's not the only intramurals sport the school has had success with as of late.

On Oct. 3, the Daytona State College flag football White and Blue Teams participated in the Michael Elam Leadership Tournament at Derbyshire Park in Daytona Beach. A total of 14 teams participated in the tournament, including teams from the University of Central Florida, Stetson University, Palm Beach Community College, Flagler College and Florida Community College at Jacksonville.

The DSC Blue Team finished in first place, defeating Bethune-Cookman University in the tournament finals 19-14. The Blue Team was led to victory by Co-Captains John Brazee and Malik Isles.

The team completed the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record while the White Team finished third with a 4-1 record.
The Blue Team also played in an 86-team regional qualifying tournament at the University of Florida on Oct. 17-19 where Jarvis Lee, Willie Fields and Captain Malik Isles led the Blue Team to DSC's highest finish ever in the tournament.

The team finished in seventh place with a 4-1 record. Prior to this tournament, DSC had never won more than three games in the tournament.

The team defeated teams from the University of South Florida, Sante Fe Community College, the University of Florida and Bethune-Cookman University before losing to a University of Central Florida team that went on to win the tournament for the second year in a row.
