The News-Journal Center will cost Daytona State College an additional $2.6 million to clear the construction debt owed to the Lively Arts Center by the News-Journal Corp.

It's official: The News-Journal Center is the latest addition to the Daytona State College campus. At least for the foreseeable future.

The College is leasing the building for use until August 2009, and possibly beyond that, depending on financial decisions regarding service costs. At that time, DSC President Kent Sharples has indicated he hopes to attain legislative approval and the necessary paperwork to make the acquisition permanent.

At present, acquiring the center has no impact on The College's budget in these unsettled economic times, the President said, because of an $800,000 contribution that covers costs until administrators can obtain OCNF or Operating Costs for New Facilities from the state.

To compensate for its new responsibilities, the Foundation added staffers Julie Rand and Kelly Ferguson, both of whom have been working at the News-Journal Center in management and fund-raising. The College's Marketing and Communication Department hired Chad Smith, also of the News-Journal Center, to coordinate planning and producing of events there.

The Center is already in use and has scheduled college performances that normally would have been held in the Theater Center in Building 220. Performing arts for students to enjoy, such as music, theatre and dance, will be at the heart of presentations at the News-Journal Center.

On Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m., the Daytona State College's Foundation invites the community to help celebrate the new center and to kick-off this year's fund-raising campaign, which marks the official opening of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Music and Science. Meet Curb, president of Curb Records, and enjoy the music of featured guest performer, county music legend, Larry Gatlin. Cocktail reception, hors d'oeuvres and student performances at 6:30. Ribbon cutting and concert at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40. They can be purchased online at
www. DaytonaState.edu/foundation or call (506) 5063-3195.

Other upcoming events at the News-Journal Center include:

A Daytona State College Civic Orchestra performance on Nov. 9 in the Davidson Theater from 3-5 p.m. The proceeds of the $5 admission benefits the United Way of Volusia-Flager counties. There is free admission to DSC and other students with proper ID. On the program will be an afternoon of orchestral works from Romantic Era, featuring Beethoven's Symphony 7.

The Daytona State College Flute Choir and Saxophone Quartet under the direction of Tereasa Payne and Simon Hutchings will be performing Nov. 17 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Gillespy Theater. And Nov. 20 sees the Daytona State College Jazz Ensemble performing in the Gillespy Theater starting at 7:30. Both events are to DSC and other students with proper ID or $5 general admission.

The News-Journal Center at Daytona State is at 221 N. Beach Street, Daytona Beach. Call (386) 506-3042 for information.
