Athletics are a part of the collegiate experience, even at the community college level. Fortunately for the students here at DBC, they should have much to root for in the upcoming spring season. Although the more "fan friendly" sports are winding down with men's and women's basketball, the women's golf and baseball programs are set for what should be very successful seasons.
After finishing third in last year's national championship and second the year before, the women's golf team looks to bring the crown back to DBC after claiming three consecutive titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
They have as good an opportunity as ever with Ashley Aguilera, Jordan Lazenby and Rachel Edwards returning. The three leaders finished in the top 10 in the national tournament last year and made the All-American team.
The Lady Falcons also have a home-course advantage with the tournament being played at LPGA International in Daytona.
The baseball program is currently in its greatest run in school history winning at least a share of the conference championship for three straight years and this year returns four players that have already committed to Division-I universities.
What sets these two teams apart from everyone else is the drive to win. This was never more apparent then recently at the spring sports media day.
It was then that each and every Lady Falcons golfer that took to the podium stressed the desire they had to win the national championship this season. Past championships is the recruiting pitch that coach Laura Brown used to attract a number of these ladies and although this group has yet to finish outside of the top 3, this is only the second team in the past half decade that doesn't have a championship to its name. This team is set to change that and is dedicated to making it happen.
The DBC baseball team had a strange 2007 season tying for the conference championship but then losing a playoff game that prevented them from competing in the state tournament.
They have a new coaching staff under head coach Tim Touma and a number of impact freshmen that should bolster the pitching staff and outfield.
Attendance went up with our basketball programs in the fall season and hopefully that trend will continue into the spring.
Part of what makes athletics great at the collegiate level is the pride that the student body can show to those programs.
This year we have a chance to root for three very successful teams with the softball team improving as well, making now as good of a time as ever to come out and watch some quality athletics.
