The Florida Community College Activities Association selected DBCC baseball and women's golf teams as the 2007 FCCAA Male and Female Academic Teams-of-the-Year. The awards are presented each year to the top academic teams of each gender within the Florida Community College system, and are symbolic of the best combined athletic and academic teams in the state's 28 community colleges.
The DBCC baseball team earned a cumulative 3.49 GPA, while the women's golf team earned a cumulative 3.59 GPA over the fall and spring semesters. For good measure, both teams were very strong athletically and were successful on the playing field. The DBCC baseball team earned a third consecutive Mid-Florida Conference Championship under Coach Tim Touma, while the women's golf team, under the guidance of veteran head coach Laura Brown, ended the season with a third-place finish at the NJCAA Women's National Championship at LPGA International.
"We are thrilled that our baseball and golf teams are being recognized by the FCCAA as the top academic teams within our state," said Athletic Director Will Dunne. "We always talk about our philosophy of the athletic program being an academic program first.
"The commitment by the coaches and student-athletes on these teams has demonstrated the importance placed on academic achievement in our programs and is a testament to the hard work by all of the parties involved, including the students, coaches, academic advisers for each team."
Team advisers are Cindy Meehan for baseball and Alison Mohr for golf. Dunne has warm words as well for faculty and staff at the new Academic Support Center.
"I want to extend my appreciation and congratulations to everyone involved in making these team awards possible because at the end of the day, our students' education is the most important measure of their achievement."
