Dear Editor,
DBCC in cooperation with Bethune-Cookman University and the UCF Daytona Regional Campus was awarded a three-year Campus Suicide Prevention Grant. We are now in year two of the grant. With a student population of over 42,000 students on all three campuses and 37,000 students here on the six campuses of DBCC it is difficult to get the message out.
I again hope that our student newspaper will reach a large number of students and faculty who read your paper and see this information that is on the posters. We need to be pro-active rather than be reactive in the event someone is thinking of suicide.
This grant is the result of Senator Gordon Smith from Oregon who lost his son to suicide when he was attending college. President Bush in 2004 signed into law this grant opportunity and DBCC was one of the first 22 selected for the awarding of the Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention Grant.
There is presently a national initiative to help curb the over 1100 suicides that take place on college campuses today each year. Also there is a strong push for eliminating the stigma associated with mental health issues as well.
Thanks for your assistance.

Dear Editor,
The Student Government Association at Daytona Beach Community College represents the student body in matters of policy formation and assists in maintaining communication among students, faculty, and administration. With elections for 2007-08 officers scheduled for April 4 and 5, here's an opportunity for DBCC students to take on a leadership role and become more involved with activities at the College.
Officer positions include: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer as well as vice-presidents and representatives for other campuses, and senators for a variety of assignments.
A candidate informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14 at 12:30 p.m., and candidates will have an opportunity to present their platform during the Candidate Forum on Tuesday, March 27 at 2 p.m. Both events take place in Bldg. 130, Rm. 154 on the DBCC Daytona Beach Campus.
For more information and election packets, visit the SGA office located in Bldg. 130, Rm. 151 on the DBCC Daytona Beach Campus at 1200 W. Int'l Speedway Blvd.
