Thousands of automobile fans converged on the Advanced Technology Center in January for the 5th annual ATC Auto Show in Daytona Beach.
A cherry red 1967 Shelby Cobra convertible won Best in Show, but many were most impressed by what they found inside the ATC - Daytona Beach Community College's high-tech academic and training facility - as well as with the students who were providing tours.
"This place is just amazing," said Mary Parker as she visited the ATC's robotics and simulation technology lab during the event. "My nephew will be starting high school in a year, and I'll definitely be encouraging him to look into coming here."
The ATC was built in 2001 through a partnership among DBCC, the business community and the school systems within DBCC's service district. Together they created a learning environment that matches the needs of business and industry while providing students top-notch curricula that exceeds state academic standards. The ATC serves a wide variety of students from adult community college students to high schoolers seeking to dual enroll in tuition-free college programs before earning their diplomas.
"This (car show) is a great way for us to showcase the ATC to people who otherwise might not have the opportunity to come out here to see what we're all about," said Michelle McCraney, executive director of the facility.
