Fiery riffs and bass clamps amplified the night. The Daytona Beach Blues Society lit up Daytona's historic downtown in mid-October with the Daytona Beach Park Association. Together, they pulled off another successful Beer & Blues Festival.
Open only to pedestrians, Beach Street was alive with visitors of all ages and breeds. Even Rover was allowed to stretch his legs in public without any harassment from the pet police. Families, friends and lovers flocked from all over to stroll past merchants and vendors and sample exotic beers from the far reaches of the world.
Florida was represented by not one, but two brews: Kona Longboard Lager and a microbrew Honey Amber Rose. Children had their own share of fun bouncing around in inflatable playgrounds, while dad checked out the vintage car show.
No one went hungry here. It was a short walk for a tasty treat from area establishments. Amber Dupuis, a DBCC hospitality management graduate, was enthusiastically dishing up pulled pork for Tom Pappa's Catering.
My Cousin Vinnie's Pizza was also there, serving slices of pizza pie to passersby.
Downtown restaurants were also packed with patrons eager to get a table on an outside patio with the hope of viewing one of the two stages. Legendary Chicago Blues musician Nick Moss headlined the night. The success of his new album, "Sadie Mae," has earned him several top-honor nominations. He was just one of the musical highlights, along with local favorites Mark Hodgson, Anthony Wiles, Jim Crouch and the DBS All-Stars.
The Daytona Blues Society was founded three years ago by local area residents who started to assemble Wednesday nights for the "True Blues" Jam at the Bank & Blues on Main Street. The Daytona Blues Society, an affiliate of the Blues Foundation in Memphis, is a nonprofit organization relying only on member support and donations.
The DBS was created by local area residents and musicians to restore Daytona's once thriving blues scene.
The society's main goal is to thread together the community. Jeff Fedora, one of its founders, said, "People who believe this music is important to their lives have a duty to support it." The mission of the DBS is "to return the blues to its rightful seat at the head of the music table in Daytona by bringing Blues fans,
musicians and clubs together."

Music Scholarship
To encourage and support young musicians who are preserving blues history, the Daytona Blues Society also maintains the Duke Brown Spirit of the Blues Scholarship Fund. A monetary scholarship in honor of "Duke Brown" is awarded to a local public high school senior pursuing studies in music each year. Interested students may want to check out the website at www.daytonabluessociety.org and apply online.

Blues Fans Wanted
If you are a blues fan and would like to hear more of it, then stop in the Bank & Blues at 701 Main St. on Wednesday nights starting at 8 p.m. for the weekly "True Blues Jam." Musicians get together and jam, rotating sets until 10 p.m. when a regional "spotlight" act takes the stage and rocks out until midnight. Those who would like to jam need to sign up with the stage manager. You just have to show up sober and ready to play. Drums, amps and mics are provided by the DBS.
