In keeping with the ongoing growth and progress at Daytona Beach Community College, In Motion will have a new editor in chief for the first time in two years. International student Jasmijn Hattinga Verschure succeeds Lauren Lieberman as editor for the 2006-07 academic year.
As such, she will receive a scholarship for her efforts, as well as the experience of working for the top community college newspaper, Division A, in the state for the past two years.
In her application for the position, Verschure addressed a number of issues, including how to better reach In Motion's readership and how to best cover the diverse five campuses, as well as issues of staffing and the paper's role in the campus community.
"The role of In Motion in the community," she says, "is to bring reliable, newsworthy items in the forms of articles, reports, interviews and reviews that will inform and entertain the school. It should be a medium for the school to communicate news to the students so they can stay informed about activities and developments on campus."
She is dedicated to getting In Motion's Web site up and running on a consistent and timely basis. Early this summer, the newspaper signed on with College Publisher, the nation's leading university and community college provider of Web site space and support. In Motion is actively seeking to staff the Webmaster position, which comes with a scholarship, and hiring the proper person will be on Verchure's "to-do" list this week.
The native of Holland brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She was editor of her school newspaper in her homeland, as well as editor in chief for "College Talk" at Dongemond College in Raamsdonksveer. She graduated cum laude for university preparatory schools from Dongemond College, Raamsdonksveer, with an Economics and Society degree, including extra courses in German and Management and Organization.
Highlights of Verschure's career in Holland was serving as a regular panelist on "Youth House of Commons," a Dutch national TV program and working for the largest student Web site in Holland and Belgium as music editor.
She has positive things to say about previous In Motion staffs, noting the many awards earned in the past several years. She says, however, "I think it is important to recruit as many people as possible. The more people, the more input, which will result in a well-balanced and versatile paper.
