For many years Volusia County has held students in the dark about sex education, preferring abstinence-only education over real world knowledge. In 2000 Florida launched the Abstinence Education program focused on educating youth about the health and psychological risks involved in early sexual activity, enhancing self-esteem and building skills such as positive goal setting, decision-making, problem solving, negotiation and refusal techniques.
